What Makes a Great Language Learner?

Learning a new language is an exciting journey that opens doors to new cultures, perspectives, and opportunities. As a language entrepreneur who passionately teaches English, Spanish, and Portuguese, I often find myself pondering the question: What makes a great language learner? Through years of experience, observations, and interactions with my students, I’ve identified key attributes that contribute to language learning success.

**1. Curiosity and Open-mindedness: Great language learners possess a natural curiosity about the world and a genuine interest in understanding other cultures. They approach language learning with an open mind, embracing new ideas and ways of expressing thoughts.I’m simply thrilled when a student asks me a challenging question because I have an opportunity to expand my knowledge. We never stop learning. It´s not because I´m a teacher that I´ll settle for what I know. Quite the contrary! After all, I see myself as an eternal student. I´m no better than the very own people I teach.

**2. Consistency in Practice: Consistency is the key to language mastery. Whether it’s dedicating a specific amount of time each day or engaging in regular language practice activities, successful language learners make language learning a part of their daily routine. I´m sure you have 15 minutes to spare and I´m convinced you do have a hobby. So if your hobby is exercising, for example, include listening to some podcasts, your favorite audiobook or even an audio lesson while you´re at it! We ARE always multitasking, aren´t we? Sign of the times!

**3. Effective Goal Setting: Setting clear and achievable goals is crucial in language learning. Great learners break down their language goals into smaller, manageable tasks, making the learning process more attainable and less overwhelming. Don´t charge yourself too much! If one day you had to cancel your lesson or failed to practice, try to make up for it the following day. On the other hand, don´t promise yourself you´re gonna be fluent in 6 months if you´re basic. That is a deal breaker!

**4. Resilience in the Face of Challenges: Language learning can be challenging, especially when faced with unfamiliar grammar rules or pronunciation difficulties. Exceptional language learners view challenges as opportunities to grow, persisting through difficulties with determination. Ask your teacher for further practice on these tough topics or look them up online. If you have pronunciation issues, check that on Google (listen to the word and repeat it. Repetition is he key!)

**5. Utilization of Diverse Learning Resources: Embracing a variety of resources is a hallmark of successful language learners. They explore language apps, movies, and music to expose yourself to different accents, vocabulary, and cultural nuances.

**6. Effective Time Management: Balancing language learning with other responsibilities requires effective time management. Great language learners prioritize their learning activities and make the most of the time they dedicate to language acquisition. Be committed to your class and do the homework your teacher proposes. Try to avoid unnecessary, last-minute cancellations because your time in class is the assessment you get and it´s when and where you see all the hard work both you and your teacher have developed!

**7. Engagement in Real-life Communication: The best way to learn a language is by using it in real-life situations. Exceptional language learners seek opportunities to communicate with native speakers, join language exchange programs, or participate in language meetups. If your teacher offers a workshop or an open conversation class with other students, don´t run away from it like the devil from the cross! I have offered lots of (free) opportunities because I care about my students´ progress.

**8. Adaptability to Different Learning Styles: Individuals have unique learning styles. Successful language learners recognize their preferred style but are also adaptable, incorporating various methods to cater to different aspects of language acquisition. Tell your teacher which learning style suits you the most. I´ll always listen to all my students´ needs and requests.

Conclusion: Becoming a great language learner is not just about mastering grammar rules and vocabulary: it combines curiosity, consistency, resilience, and adaptability.
